Remote Dosing and Technology Bring New Hope to Opioid Recovery

In South Carolina, new tools and more flexible treatment approaches are helping people with opioid use disorder (OUD) find recovery in ways that fit their lives. One powerful example is Koree Miller, who began her treatment journey during the COVID-19 pandemic and was able to continue methadone treatment from home thanks to a remote monitoring system. This technology – offered through Sonara Health – allowed her to safely take her medication away from triggering environments, freeing up time and building trust with her care team.

Across the state, opioid overdose deaths have begun to decline, with some counties seeing great improvements. The reasons are complex, but with Narcan becoming more available, along with expanded access to treatment, it’s continuing to make a big difference. Treatment centers are now able to offer more take-home doses, a shift from previous regulations that required frequent in-person visits.

Supporting Recovery Through Trust and Flexibility

Amanda Jordan, Clinical Director at BHG Charleston Treatment Center, explained how pandemic-era regulatory changes helped providers better meet patients where they are. Flexible dosing policies and remote monitoring don’t just improve convenience – they help restore dignity, foster independence and strengthen the foundation for lasting recovery. Amanda highlighted the critical role of first responders and treatment center staff in distributing Narcan and providing consistent, compassionate care.

For patients like Koree, the result is more than just clinical progress – it’s a powerful step toward a new life. With fewer barriers and more support, recovery becomes a sustainable, empowering path forward.
