Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) at BHG

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is a proven, evidence-based approach for substance use disorder (SUD). At BHG, we combine FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) – methadone, buprenorphine (like Suboxone) and naltrexone – with counseling and support services to help patients feel stable and focused on recovery. This is part of our full treatment model, which includes programs like Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

How Medication-Assisted Treatment Works

MAT uses medications that act on the same brain receptors as opioids, but in a safe, controlled way. Instead of producing a “high,” these medications:

  • Reduce cravings
  • Ease withdrawal symptoms
  • Provide stability so you can focus on healing

Medications Backed by Science

Methadone

Methadone is a long-acting medication that helps reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms and cravings, so you can feel more stable and focused on recovery. It lasts 24 to 36 hours, helping your body stay balanced throughout the day. Methadone is prescribed and carefully monitored by a medical provider in a safe, supportive setting to ensure it’s effective and meets your individual needs.

Buprenorphine (like Suboxone®, Brixadi® and Sublocade®)

Buprenorphine is a medication that helps reduce cravings and withdrawal while also blocking the effects of other opioids. It works gently in the body and can last 24 to 36 hours – or longer, depending on the medication – providing steady relief throughout the day or even longer. Because buprenorphine does not produce the “high” of other opioids, it allows you to feel clear-headed and better able to focus on your recovery and daily life.

Naltrexone (like Vivitrol®)

Naltrexone is a medication that blocks opioids, preventing them from producing a “high.” It is typically given as a once-monthly injection, so you don’t have to take a daily medication. By blocking the effects of opioids, naltrexone supports abstinence-based recovery and helps reduce the risk of relapse, giving you added protection as you focus on long-term recovery.
