Three Things to Know
1. Some adults may have a new 80-hour monthly requirement
Starting in 2027, some adults with Medicaid may need to complete at least 80 hours each month of work, school, job training, volunteering or other approved activities.
2. Some people will renew Medicaid more often
People in the Medicaid expansion group may need to renew their coverage every 6 months instead of once a year.
3. The new rules will not affect everyone
Some people may not have to meet the new requirement based on how they qualify for Medicaid or because they meet an exclusion.
What You Can Do Right Now
Keep your information up to date
Make sure Medicaid has your current:
- Mailing address
- Phone number
- Email address
- Online account information
Watch for Medicaid notices
Open all letters, emails and online messages from Medicaid. Even if something looks routine, check to see if you need to respond.
Respond by the deadline
If Medicaid asks you for information, send it in by the date listed.
Ask for help if you need it
If you get a notice, bring it to your BHG treatment center. Our team can help you understand what it says and what you may need to do next.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who Does This Affect?
The new work or community activity rules generally apply to adults who:
- Are ages 19 to 64
- Have Medicaid through the expansion group
- Are not pregnant
- Are not on Medicare
Some people who qualify for Medicaid because of pregnancy, age or disability generally will not have to meet the new rule.
Not sure if this applies to you? Your BHG care team can help you understand what questions to ask and where to find more information. Find your BHG location.
What Counts Toward the New Requirement?
If the rule applies to you, activities that may count include:
- Working
- Going to school
- Taking part in job training
- Volunteering or doing community service
You may be able to combine different activities to reach the 80-hour monthly goal. If you already work about 80 hours each month, you may already meet the requirement through your job.
Do I Qualify for an Exclusion?
Some people with a substance use disorder may not have to meet the new work or community activity requirement.
Being in treatment at BHG does not automatically mean you are excluded. It depends on your individual situation and your state’s rules. View your state’s resources below to get more information.
If you think an exclusion may apply to you, talk with your BHG care team.
When Do the Changes Start?
States must begin using the new rules by January 1, 2027 so you may start receiving Medicaid notices around that time.
The earliest someone may lose coverage because of these rules is expected to be around April 2027, and only if they do not respond or do not qualify for an exception.
What If My Medicaid Coverage Ends?
If your Medicaid is denied or ends, you may still have options.
You may be able to:
- Send in missing information
- Apply again
- Appeal the decision
- Look at other coverage options
Some appeal deadlines can be short, so it is important to act quickly.
If you are a BHG patient, contact your treatment center as soon as you can.
